With the deep trough remaining stationary over western Europe, strong warm airmass advection from N Africa and the Mediterranean continues into the Alpine region and the Balkan peninsula, while much cooler temperatures remain in place across western Europe. Airmass under the extensive ridge is characterized by mostly dry heat (except coastal areas where extremely warm seas are resulting in mid 20s dewpoints). Read more about theextremely warm Adriatic sea which is getting (much!) warmer by the end of the week!.

Much of south, central and eastern Europe will continue experiencing well above average afternoon with extremely hot temperatures.

As the upper ridge and heat wave remains almost stationary, the highest temperatures are again expected across same areas as the previous days – maximized across parts of Italy, S Spain and France, Balkan peninsula as well across E Europe into Ukraine and Romania, Moldova. Peak temperatures in the eastern Po plain (N Italy) are expected to reach up to 42 °C, together with locally high dewpoints near 25°C further north across Veneto region (Po river delta); Be aware of extremely high Heat Index! Some parts of south-central Italy and Sardinia also expect temperatures in range 38-44 °C locally! The Pannonian basin, including Hungary, E Croatia, N Serbia and W Romania are also expected to reach up to 35-40 °C, especially across N Serbia and Bosnia. Southern Spain will warm up a bit more compared to previous days, southern parts could experience near 40 °C again.

A closer look across Italy, Adriatic sea and western Balkan peninsula; some models are indeed hinting peak temperatures 39-41°C locally. Be aware of dangerous heat, which can lead into serious health problems if exposted during peak time hours! Read more about heat wave health risks.

Looking ahead, an intense heat wave with extremely and locally record-breaking temperatures will peak this weekend and continue into early next week. Models are now finally in good agreement about the sharp trough leading into ridging pattern collapse by mid next week with a lot of severe weather expected across central Europe as the trough moves across this region. In particular, particularly severe thunderstorms may be expected with the environment being extremely unstable given the aforementioned high sea surface temperatures. The second half of next week will bring much cooler temperatures into central Europe and also Balkan peninsula, while the ridge moves into southeastern Europe. Until then, expect 6-12 °C too warm daily temperatures in many areas, locally all-time heat records will be broken if models verify completely.
