Peak of heat wave & likely record breaking heat today – Friday, August 4th, 2017

Update on the current intense heat wave which is expected to peak today, in particular across the Mediterranean, parts of central Europe and the Balkan peninsula. Yet another extremely hot day is expected as temperatures will easily climb into low 40s range during peak time hours locally this afternoon. Generally, the airmass is about 1 °C warmer in the lowest levels than yesterday, which will allow many areas to approach the 40 °C threshold as well as push temperatures locally into new record values.

Yesterday was a very hot day almost in the same areas as the previous days, peak afternoon temperatures reached up to 42 °C in SE France and up to 43 °C in central Italy, Spain and W Balkan peninsula. Some all-time records have been shattered, see below:

The deep trough remains stationary over northern and western Europe, while strong warm airmass advection from Mediterranean continues into the Alpine region and the Balkan peninsula. Much cooler temperatures remain in place across western Europe and will be spreading towards central Europe this weekend with progress of the trough. Airmass under the extensive ridge is characterized by mostly dry heat (except coastal areas where extremely warm seas are resulting in mid 20s dewpoints). Read more about the extremely warm Adriatic sea which is getting (much!) warmer by the end of the week!. 850 mb temperature anomaly remains above +10 °C over broad areas. Much of south, central and eastern Europe will continue experiencing a well above average afternoon with extremely hot and locally record breaking temperatures above 40 °C again.

The highest temperatures are again expected across same areas as the previous days – maximized across parts of Italy, S Spain and France, Balkan peninsula as well across E Europe into Ukraine and Romania, Moldova. Peak temperatures in the eastern Po plain (N Italy) are expected to reach up to 43 °C, together with locally high dewpoints near 25 °C further north across the Veneto region (Po river delta). Be aware of extremely high Heat Index there! Read more about heat wave health risks. Some parts of south-central Italy and Sardinia also expect temperatures in range 38-44 °C locally! The Pannonian basin, including Hungary, E Croatia, N Serbia and W Romania are also expected to reach locally up to 42 °C, especially across N Serbia, some parts of Croatia and Bosnia. Southern Spain will warm up a bit more compared to previous days, southern parts could peak near 43 °C again.

Be aware of dangerous heat, which can lead into serious health problems if you are exposed during peak time hours! A combination of high humidity and extremely hot temperatures can be dangerous, even deadly. do not ignore the danger. Read more about heat wave health risks.

Looking ahead, the intense heat wave with extremely and locally record-breaking temperatures will peak this weekend and will gradually weaken early next week, except for the S Balkan peninsula and the rest of SE Europe, where the heat wave will remain very intense! Models are now in very good agreement about the sharp trough leading into heat wave collapse by mid next week with a lot of severe weather expected across central Europe as the trough moves across this region. Particularly severe storms are expected with the environment being extremely unstable due to the aforementioned high sea surface temperatures. The second half of next week will bring much cooler temperatures into central Europe and also Balkan peninsula, while the ridge moves into southeastern Europe. Here is a map for Wednesday where the deep trough with strong jetstream rounding its base enters central Europe, expect a lot of severe weather activity from Sunday to Wednesday around the Alps.
