Typhoon Mangkhut hit Hong Kong and southeastern China today – September 16, 2018

Typhoon Mangkhut hit Hong Kong and southeastern China today with intense rainfall and powerful winds. As expected, landfall occurred in the late morning (UTC). Numerous reports have come in, indicating dangerous winds and locally significant damage.

The typhoon was Category 1 at the time of landfall, still a very potent tropical system. Keep in mind, however, that it was a Category 5 super typhoon when it hit the Phillipines on Friday. Few reports have come in from the northern part of the Luzon island, which was the hardest hit region.
