Severe weather outbreak over western Turkey – Istanbul tornado, June 19, 2014
Severe supercell thunderstorms hit the eastern Aegean, Marmara sea and W Turkey June 19 afternoon in an expected severe weather outbreak. A MDT+ risk area was issued for threats of very large hail, severe wind gusts, heavy rainfall and tornadoes.
A number of severe supercells formed in the area by mid afternoon. Istanbul was hit by an impressive tornado, which formed over the sea, but made landfall and caused considerable damage (no EF rating yet). The same supercell also produced large hail. Bursa, SW of Istanbul, was hit by another severe hailstorm with hail up to 5 cm in diameter.
