What if… Earth’s terrain would be inverted by Thanos?
If you are a Marvel fan, or if you at least follow social media daily or even weekly, you probably know who the Avengers are, and who Thanos is. In 3 days, the “Avengers: Endgame” movie will be released. This seems like a fitting time to take a minute and to scientifically simulate one of the many things that Thanos (the main antagonist of the movie) could do if he were to arrive to Earth in a bad mood.
About 70 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by water. The oceans hold about 96.5 percent of all Earth’s water. If one one sunny day, Thanos would visit Earth in a bad mood, he could use his infinity gauntlet and snap his fingers to reverse the Earth’s surface. Oceans and lakes would become mountains and islands. Whole continents would become submerged, becoming oceans and islands becoming lakes.
We took the data from the online GEBCO dataset, which shows the Earth’s terrain elevation relative to the sea level. Then we inverted the values, so what you see as mountains and islands on these maps, is actual terrain that is otherwise hidden under water.
