UPDATE: CAT5 Hurricane Dorian makes a devastating first landfall on Abaco Island, the Bahamas

The extremely powerful hurricane Dorian made first landfall in the northeastern Bahamas. Hurricane Hunter aircraft recon indicated rapid strengthening of the hurricane, with peak sustained wind speeds of 185 mph (298 km/h) and a central pressure down to ~910 mbar.

Indeed the satellite presentation of hurricane Dorian just before landfall was by far the most impressive so far, displaying a symmetric eyewall and a massive central dense overcast, with a thick, complete eyewall. In addition to extremely powerful winds, a massive storm surge was expected.

Indeed the satellite presentation of hurricane Dorian just before landfall was by far the most impressive so far, displaying a symmetric eyewall and a massive central dense overcast, with a thick, complete eyewall. In addition to extremely powerful winds, a massive storm surge was expected. Essentially a combination of EF4 strength winds combined with a massive flood, ongoing for an extended period of time.

Dorian made landfall over Abaco Island around 15h UTC. First reports show massive severe wind and storm surge damage. See the first reports below. Meanwhile, Dorian continues slowly tracking over the Bahamas westwards and will be affecting the islands today and tomorrow. A more detail analysis of current development and forecasts is in preparation, stay tuned.
