Destructive tornadoes hit Alabama, Georgia and Florida, USA – March 3, 2019
At least 23 fatalities have been reported as a number of tornadoes hit Alabama, Georgia and Florida. The National Weather Service declared tornado emergencies. Here are some first reports.
Numerous simultaneous tornado warnings were in effect, up to 13 at one point. A number of tornadoes was reported, including at least one large wedge. The strongest tornadoes were certainly EF-3, and quite likely EF-4.
In the satellite imagery below note the many isolated supercells in the warm sector over Georgia, ahead of the long squall line along the cold front over Alabama. Numerous discrete overshooting tops in the squall line also indicate discrete thunderstorms, particularly along the southern part of the line.
